Although Gambians are yet to know how many children President Adama Barrow has, his family size from all indications is likely to cost taxpayers millions of Dalasi every year.
The Barrow family allegedly spend exorbitant sums of money on staffing and security.
Both wives of the president- Fatoumatta and Sarjoe have a team of staff appointed at their own personal discretion and a group of military and police officers that provides them protection round the clock.
During Madam Sarjoe Mballow-Barrow’s recent tour in the provinces, she was followed by a convoy filled with her staff and security personnel.
Perhaps Finance Minister Amadou Sanneh should cut from the unauthorized government spending on the First Family if he is looking for savings to deal with the national debt crises.
During one of the National Assembly sittings, the NAM for Banjul South Fatoumatta Njie raised concern over the millions poured into the office of the First Lady. She told the finance minister: ““It will not be fair to the taxpayers to create the office of the First Lady when the constitution does not provide for it.”
The outspoken parliamentarian argued that it’s very unfair for Barrow’s wives to be given offices because their husband is president.
