The newly appointed Catholic Bishop of The Gambia, Rev. Fr. Gabriel Mendy has not yet received any congratulatory message from President Adama Barrow.
Rev. Fr. Mendy was appointed last week by Pope Francis. This is the first time ever a Gambian has reached this level in the Catholic Diocese of Banjul.
“As far as I am aware, the new bishop has not received any message from Barrow,” said a member of the diocese who spoke to What’s On-Gambia.
He added: “I don’t know why the delay. Rev. Fr. Mendy’s appointment is historic because he is the first Gambian bishop.”
Rev. Fr Gabriel Mendy is expected to be ordained early next year at the Independence Stadium in a historic ceremony to be attended by thousands of Catholics in both the Gambia and Senegal.
