Aisha Gaye has been tipped to become The Gambia’s leading female Hajj guide, following a great performance at this year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

Aisha, who was born and brought up in Banjul, helped hundreds of Gambian pilgrims to successfully complete their Hajj rituals in accordance with Islamic teachings.

A member of the Gambia Hajj Commission, who was also in Saudi Arabia, told What’s On-Gambia: “She’s young, but an intelligent guide. I saw in our records that she is very familiar with the Hajj pilgrimage and its rituals.”

He continued: “Aisha is polite and she treats the pilgrims with dignity and respect. They really like her. She has a good knowledge of Arabic, which makes it easy for her to communicate with Saudis.”

According to the Hajj Commission member, who preferred to remain anonymous, Aisha is also well versed in the Holy Quran.

“To be a Hajj guide for Gambian pilgrims is daunting. Many of them don’t know a lot about the rituals of the Hajj. This year, it was a lot of hard work for Aisha and her colleagues.”

The young female guide is the daughter of Imam Tafsir Gaye of Banjul and famous Islamic scholar, Aja Maimuna Savage.  Her mum is the country's first female Hajj guide.
