Former Jimara National Assembly Member Alhagie Sowe has dropped a political bombshell, claiming that controversial Senegalese marabout Kounkande was brought to The Gambia to help President Adama Barrow secure victory in the December 5 presidential election.
In a revelation shared on his WhatsApp status, Sowe disclosed that Kounkande had assured them that Barrow would win the election.
Sowe, who comes from the same constituency as President Barrow, has been a vocal supporter of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) since dumping the opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC).
After losing his bid for re-election to the National Assembly in 2022, Sowe abandoned the GDC and joined the ruling party. Since then, he has reportedly been working hard to strengthen Barrow’s political support, particularly in Jimara.
But his latest revelation has raised eyebrows, especially his disclosure that Kounkande is already in The Gambia and will remain in the country until after the presidential election.
“Kounkande’s invitation is part of preparations ahead of the December presidential election,” Sowe wrote on his WhatsApp status.
The revelation suggests that the controversial marabout’s presence is part of efforts by some supporters of the president ahead of the crucial election.
Meanwhile, Sowe is reportedly hoping that a third-term victory for Barrow could open the door for him to secure an appointment in the country’s foreign service…
