Barrow allegedly wants UDP to cancel December congress

President Adama Barrow has allegedly appealed to the executive committee of the United Democratic Party (UDP) to cancel their upcoming congress.

A party insider revealed to What’s On-Gambia that the Gambian leader is scared the congress will bolster his vice president, Ousainou Darboe’s  position as the most powerful political leader in the country.

“I don’t know how true it is, but I heard he wants the UDP congress to be cancelled,” said our source.

The congress, which is scheduled to take place in December, is a high profile meeting of the party’s great and good.  One of the main tasks of the delegates is to elect the people who will prepare the UDP for the next presidential election.

Some political pundits strongly believe that Vice President Ousainou Darboe, who is also the Secretary General of the UDP, might use the congress to further fortify his position by stacking the party’s upper echelons with loyalists.

Our source said: “There are some UDP executive committee members who are definitely going to lose their positions, especially those so close to Barrow.”

The precise venue for the congress remains a mystery. What is known is that the delegates would come from different parts of the country and Darboe is expected to kick off proceedings with a colourful ceremony.

The vice president, who claims to have a very good relationship with the president, will use his opening address to outline the UDP’s priorities for the coming years.

Observers will be closely looking to see if the Gambian leader, who was a member of the party before his nomination as the Coalition’s presidential candidate, will play a major role in the congress.
