Increasing numbers of girls are spending thousands of dalasi to regain their virginity at a private clinic situated near the Serre Kunda Sandiga, according to reliable information reaching What’s On-Gambia.

A young woman, who wants to remain anonymous, revealed that the owner of the clinic is a retired health worker called Dr. Wahab.

“He is making a lot of money. There is a huge surge in demand for the procedure,” she said. “I was also there after I lost my virginity to an ex-boyfriend.”

Many unmarried girls are forced by their families into lies or remedies to go to the marriage bed as virgins.

The young woman visited Dr. Wahab after meeting a semester (Gambian living abroad), who later married her. 

“I was afraid that there would not be a happy marriage if my husband knew I was not a virgin. We are still together and he believes he is the first man to have penetrative sex with me.”

According to her, Dr. Wahab is not the only medical worker that helps girls disguise that they had sex before. 

Critics have condemned the practice, saying the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare should take serious action to stop fake doctors like Wahab.
