Female taxi driver, Haddy Jagne: “I will continue to prove men wrong”

She has an adventurous spirit. Haddy Jagne, the country’s only and second ever female taxi driver, said she would continue to prove the men wrong.

She was the guest on last week’s Fess, an online talk show, anchored by Mariem Dainty.

According Haddy, she started her new job in May 2015 after briefly working as a butcher.

When asked why she decided to drive a taxi, the mother-of-one responded: “We cannot just sit down and wait for the government or private sector to create jobs for us. I think we have to do it for ourselves.”

Haddy, who speaks fluent English, attended Gambia Senior Secondary School. She said: “When I was still in school, I wanted to be an air hostess. But then after school I didn’t see the possibility of being an air hostess, so I ventured into business.”

Haddy admitted that it is not easy to be a female taxi driver in the country. According to her, a male customer once told her: “It is not worth it. This is not for women. You have to go home and wait for your husband.”

The young mother said taxi driving is a noble profession.

“I think women can do it better than the guys,” she said
