According to Daily Observer, she will be a launching a national campaign against the harmful practice tomorrow at the Sheraton Hotel in Brufut.
Sensitization meetings with community leaders have already started in the administrative regions of the country.
In a recent meeting held in the Kanifing Municipality, Mayor Yankuba Colley lauded the First Lady’s initiative and called on parents to put an end to child marriage. According to him, some parents force their daughters into it for money.
Child marriage is a dangerous practice that can have harmful effects on young girls. A Gambian law student in India, Kumba Mbouge called it “a transgression against a girl’s self-autonomy.”
“It is the duty of parents and society to nurture children, protect them and give them proper education,” she said.
