More than 3000 metric tonnes of high-quality rice donated by Japan for Gambians living in poverty are being sold in markets. 

One Abdoulie Cham, who saw the rice in a shop in Serre Kunda, disclosed: "They sold it to their businessmen friends. I discovered that the businessmen are selling the 30kg for D825." 

He continued: "There is no control at all. They did the same thing with the previous donations." 

Shortly before receiving the Japan-donated rice, the government announced they will sell it to interested buyers.  

"The rice comes in bags of 30 kilograms clearly marked “Japanese Grant” and shall be sold in lots of 2500 bags per lot at the cost of Four Hundred and Fifty Dalasi (D450.00) per bag." 

The interested buyers were asked to apply and send their applications to the Office of The President.  

The government is yet to disclose what they intend to do with the proceeds from the rice.
