The Inter-Schools Athletics Championship has been suspended as a precaution to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

According to the secretary general of the Secondary School Sports Association, the event, which was scheduled to be held from the 18th - 21st March, has now been suspended until further notice.

Mr Lamin Jammeh disclosed: "We receive a communique from our deputy permanent secretary that we are asked to suspend our activities for the time being."

He added: "We heard there was an ad-hoc committee that met at the State House and it was there that it was decided that primary school sports activities and the Independence Day Celebrations should be cancelled."

Jammeh disclosed the committee also agreed that the Inter-Schools Athletics Championship should be suspended.

Physical education teacher, John Foday told What's On-Gambia: "Our students have trained so hard for the competition, and for some of them, it would be their final chance to prove themselves to be scouted by government departments."

Held annually, the Inter-Schools Athletics Championship is one of the biggest sporting events in the country. It attracts thousands of spectators from different parts of The Gambia.
