Gambian teen

American-born Gambian teenager has been accepted to more than 10 colleges and awarded over $260,000 in scholarships.

Fatou Jammeh was a student at Newburgh Free Academy - a well-known comprehensive high school in New York that offers several elective opportunities.

The young woman disclosed that while in high school she also participated in a cornucopia of extracurricular activities. She was a member of the Student Council, National Honors Society and Varsity Cheer captain.

"And doing this all while graduating from high school with an A.A.S degree in Cyber Security. Just wanted to brag a little bit because if you know me then you know I am super hard on myself. But I am proud of how far I've come," she said.

Her parents, Saloum and Awa Jammeh are both from Faji Kunda in the Kanifing Municipality. Her father moved to the USA in 1993 and her mother later joined him in 2001 - one year after they got married.

Fatou was born in New York. She is Saloum and Awa's first child.
