Is The Gambia losing millions of dalasi? Viber’s support team writes to What’s On-Gambia

The Viber Supper Team in the USA is not aware of any ban on Viber services in the country.

In an e-mail sent to What's On-Gambia, team member Adam M wrote: "We have taken care of this issue and it should be resolved by now."

Adam did not go further to explain why it is still difficult to access their famous internet telephony service.

In the past days, rumors were circulating that Viber is banned in The Gambia.

" It's now very difficult for me to regularly speak to my family and friends. The international calling cards are expensive and the units fly so quickly," said Lamin Ceesay in Sweden.

Thousands of Gambians are using Viber, and this, according to information reaching What's On-Gambia, is threatening the revenues of The Gambia Telecommunications Company (GAMTEL) and private GSM operators.

Is The Gambia about to follow the footsteps of countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Bangladesh?

Since the emergence of VoIP calls, several countries have either banned or talked about banning them in their territories.

Last year, in Germany the telecoms provider, Deutsche Telekom had banned the use of VoIP over their network stating unfair competition as the sole reason.

What's On-Gambiais trying to secure an interview with GAMTEL to find out more about rumored ban.
