Police are investigating the death of Isatou Mendy, a bartender at a bar on Louvell Street in Banjul, following an alleged altercation with a man who was reportedly intoxicated.
According to an eyewitness, the man had previously been banned from the bar because of his allegedly aggressive and rude behaviour when drunk. The witness said the situation escalated when Isatou attempted to prevent him from entering the premises.
“The drunk man was banned from the bar because he could be aggressive and rude when drunk. So when Isatou tried to stop him from entering, the situation quickly escalated,” the eyewitness said.
The witness alleged that the man struck Isatou at the back of her neck, causing her to suddenly fall to the ground.
She was reportedly rushed to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Isatou was said to be related to the bar’s owner’s wife.
Police are continuing their investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine what led to Isatou’s death.
