Meet the young people employed to uncover human rights abuses during Jammeh’s era

Here are some of the young people employed by the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) to help them gather evidence and uncover information on the human rights abuses committed during Jammeh’s 22-year-old rule.

Musu Bakoto Sawo

A lecturer at the University of The Gambia, Musu holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in Human rights and Democratization in Africa from the University of Pretoria in South Africa and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of The Gambia.

She is the Commission's deputy executive secretary. Reacting to her appointment, Musu said, “I am honoured by this opportunity and pray that I remain grounded and true to the objectives of the TRRC while in office.”

Mansour Jobe

He is the TRRC's deputy director of research and investigations. Mansour just completed his Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Human Rights Law from the University of Nottingham in the UK and holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Igbinedion University in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He completed his Bar Finals (BL) from the Gambia Law School in 2014 and eventually enrolled as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of The Gambia.

Mustapha Kah

He is a graduate in Political Science and Law and currently working at the Ministry of Basic & Secondary Education (MOBSE).

Mustapha, a prominent youth leader who worked with different organisations in the country, was appointed by the president as a commissioner of the TRRC.

Ebrima Sonko

Born and brought up in Brikama, Ebrima was the secretary general of the University of The Gambia Students' Union. He just completed his LBB.

Ebrima, who is currently managing the Institute for Academic Research, was appointed as a research assistant.

Rohey Sanyang

She was also appointed as a research assistant. Rohey, who is widely respected by her peers, recently completed her LLB at the University of The Gambia.

Bubacarr Sambou

He’s a member of the Peace Ambassadors-Gambia and also works as an IT assistant at the Gambia College. Babucarr, a student at the University of The Gambia, is the TRRC’s Youth and Children’s Coordinator.

Ansumana Ceesay

Also a product of the University of The Gambia with a degree in Development Studies, Ansumana is also among the young people employed by the TRRC. He is a reconciliation officer.

Sainey Bah

An assistant lecturer at the University of The Gambia, Sainey holds an LLM from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He is also a reconciliation officer for the commission.
