After weeks of COVID-19 shutdown, schools will reopen today for Grade 9 students who are scheduled to take their Basic Education Certificate Examination this year.
According to the Minister of Basic Secondary Education (MoBSE), the decision was taken in consultation with the Ministry of Health, Gambia Teachers' Union, Conference of Principals, Association of Lower Basic School Heads and international organisations in the country.
“In keeping with the WHO measures and the Ministry of Health guidelines, my ministry will be closely working with our regional education directorates to ensure compliance on the social and physical distancing and availability of Covid-19 personal protection equipment,” said the minister.
She disclosed the school closures have affected about 674,300 students in conventional and recognised madrassa schools from early childhood to senior secondary school levels.
Minister Cole also announced that Grade 12 students will also return to school soon.
