The Senegambia Novelty Run to be held from 19th – 21st January 2018 is expected to set a record for the longest relay run in Africa and the 2nd longest in the world and may qualify to be included in the Guinness Book of Records.
The man behind it, George F Gomez said it will be a relay from Banjul to Dakar with night stops in Kaolack and Mbour.
“Teams, which can register from any part of the world, will consist of 10 runners with each runner doing 15 kilometres a day and a total of 30 kilometres in the 3 days of the event. This is going to be the longest relay run in Africa and the 2nd longest in the World.”
According to the veteran sports manager and chairman of the National Sports Council, the event has the potential to enhance tourism in both Senegal and The Gambia.
“This is a good time to visit The Gambia and join the 4 days of entertaining sports and culture. Accredited spectators will be provided air conditioned luxury coaches to follow the runners. They will be provided food and accommodation in the same hotels as the athletes/officials and will join the athletes in all the programs laid for them including courtesy calls on top government officials.”
George added that an Organising Committee shall be appointed soon, responsible for the organization, supervision, and control of the event. It will be chaired by Abdoulie Kah, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, because of his vast experience in sports activities and co-chaired by Adama Bah from the private sector.
