It’s a choice they’ve made and were not given a second chance. This heartbreaking picture gallery shows the faces of some of the young Gambians that died recently while trying to reach Italy in search of better opportunities. They were all less than 30 years old.
Among those who perished in the Mediterranean Sea this year include a young mother of two. Fatou Jatta was from a reputable family in Brikama. Her mother is a headmistress in Foni.
Ebou Sohna and AB Njie were two friends from Banjul, who died side by side. It’s not clear how they died but the pair were on their way to Italy. Music promoter, Pa Goreh Mbye was among the first to break the news of their dead online.
“Help your brothers and sisters to try business not to sacrifice their lives. Say no to back way,” he wrote on Facebook.
Also among those who died when their boats capsized in the waters between Libya and Italy include Omar Bah, Abdou Badjie and Basiru Trawally.
One Lamin Njie said Abdou Badjie’s death was a shock to many. According to him, he was polite, friendly and down to earth.
The families of all the young people that died on the back way are still grieving. Many are appealing to the government to step up their efforts in stopping the menace.
May their souls rest in peace!
