Tourists unite to condemn the $20 security fee at the airport

More tourists have joined the chorus of condemnation following the government's decision to introduce a $20 security fee on all arriving and departing passengers using the Banjul International Airport.

The collection has already started after the erection of booths in the airport building.

Stewart Ramsay, a British pensioner who frequently visits The Gambia, said: "This is not about money, it's just fueling these individuals greed and we are not anyone's fool."

The pensioner wrote on Facebook: "In the year 2003, tax was applied to tourists entering the country and yes we did have to queue on entering. At that time, it was £5, this moved on and the air companies started to collect the following year as a lot of money paid was eaten. The price then went to £10 entry per person each way and this was included in your fare.

"Now we are asked for a further £20 in and £20 out. Each of you will have your own ideas on that. I don't yet know whether I will be out this season. However, these are the rules of the greedy people and we will all pay."

Steward continued: "As a side issue, I always hand out a fiver in change when I arrive and my handouts continued during my time in the country. I suggest you keep your hands in your pockets until you recoup this greed before you loosen your purse strings. This is not about money, it's just fueling these individuals greed and we are anyone's fools."

Even the authorities at the Banjul International Airport aren't sanguine about the new fees.
