UTG student offered scholarship to study in Rwanda after viral video

A student of the Univesity of The Gambia (UTG) has been offered a full scholarship for a Master's Degree in Rwanda following his articulate interview on how to rebuild Africa.

"We have to stay in Africa, develop Africa and then show the world that Africa has a better image than the one they portray in the West," Ousman Touray told Juliet Ryan - a Gambia-based British YouTuber.

The student continued: "For far too long, people have been portraying Africa negatively to the outside world, and we know that was done by individuals whose sole aim was to dominate Africa to exploit Africa's resources and then to continue to colonise us politically. Now, our role as academics, as young scholars, is how do we make sure that this picture is changed from the literature itself - going back to rewrite the books, rewrite the history of Africa."

The video went viral on social media with over one million views. Kenyan law professor and public speaker PLO Lumumba described Ousman as "a devoted young pan-Africanist."

One Yasin M Kirage in Canada announced on Facebook: "The African Descent Society BC and African Descent Youth Engagement will pay a full scholarship to Young Pan Africanist Ousman Touray from The Gambia."

He disclosed: "We spoke to Ousman and he told us that his dream is to do a Masters Degree in Rwanda. We asked him we can sponsor you in Canada, London or America. He refused all and he said, I NEED TO STUDY RWANDA DEVELOPMENT MODEL. He wants to do an MA in Development studies. We are going to pay his dream of studying in Rwanda National University 2020/2021."
