This may surprise some but it’s no secret that majority of Gambian employees working under unscrupulous Asian businessmen are treated like garbage.
These businessmen, majority of them from Asian countries like India and Lebanon, own most of the country’s major investments along the Kairaba Avenue.
Reports reaching What’s On-Gambia have it that most of their employees are treated like second class citizens in their own country. As if being verbally degraded on daily basis is not enough, they are reported to be exploited and abused by receiving very little wages half of which usually cover only transport fares.
Some of these businessmen even import workers from their own countries instead of offering employment to Gambians. And to a greater extent, even refuse to integrate into Gambian society which many claim is lack of respect for the country.
There are calls for the government to introduce policies to ensure that Asian businessmen respect their employees, integrate with the local communities both economically and socially.
Many people frown at the fact that the millions they make are sent back home instead of spending and re-investing locally which the government should look into because it is at the expense of poor Gambians.
These are the same men that exploit young girls by showering them with expensive gifts in exchange for intimate relations.
The smiling Coast is accommodating to foreign investments but not at the detriment of its citizens. Say No to exploitation.
