Young Gambians turn to pornographic video sharing site to look for love

Online dating is now becoming one of the most popular ways to find a partner with EU or American passport.

The number of Gambians using dating sites has drastically increased. What’s On-Gambia discovered that more than one hundred young Gambians have subscribed to XVideos, a free pornographic video sharing website with up to 350 million monthly visitors.

Members of XVideos are able to access each other's profiles or send messages to each other. Majority of Gambian users are young men looking for toubab wives that can offer them visa to Europe or America or a long-term financial support.

Adama, 20, is one of the users and he wrote on his profile: “Am seeking for a female and am very strong man, you can contact me on Skype and is …….or Hotmail  ….”

Kumbs, a 20-year-old girl, wrote: “I adore having sex.”

Some concerned Gambians are becoming increasingly worried about what youngsters do online.  Adult predators are now using the internet to exchange sexually explicit photos with vulnerable young people.

A popular social commentator, Mustapha Ndour said: “In Senegal, people have heard recently about a young girl that was abducted, raped, killed and then thrown in the street. Some youth groups have now started raising awareness about online predators.”

He added: “Kids, nowadays, are getting very used to the internet and  they try to hide it from their parents. If we need our kids to succeed, we have to encourage them to live and act responsibly.”

What’s On-Gambiais trying to secure an interview with the police spokesman, David Kujabi to find out what strategy is in place to protect young Gambians from sexual exploitation on the internet.
