A 33-year-old woman has denied allegations that she has two husbands, a situation that could lead to legal consequences.

Mariam Kamara, a hairdresser, is married to a 76-year-old Dutch pensioner. But it is alleged that she recently traveled to Sierra Leone to marry another man.

The allegations surfaced after her 17-year-old daughter posted photos of the Sierra Leonean wedding on social media.

In an interview with What’s On-Gambia, Mariam refuted the accusations. According to her,  the Dutch pensioner, whom she met in 2021, is her only spouse.

“The wedding my daughter is talking about happened before I met my current husband. Those are old photos,” she said.

Mariam’s 76-year-old husband purchased a D4 million house in Brufut, where she lives with her children from a previous marriage.

“After getting married, I brought my children from Sierra Leone to join me here in The Gambia to offer them a better life. I don’t understand why my eldest daughter decided to turn against me,” the 33-year-old mother explained.

She revealed the police are planning to take her to court for bigamy.

“I did not do anything illegal. They have no evidence that I have two husbands,” she said.

Following the allegations, Mariam’s Dutch husband and teenage daughter have moved out of the Brufut home and are now renting at an undisclosed location, joined by the teenager’s father and his wife.
