431,000 views and counting: Gee Kee Lataay is most watched Gambian film online!

A Mandinka film produced by Cherno Jallow has become the first Gambian film to reach almost half a million views on YouTube.

As of Tuesday, Gee Kee Lataay, which was published on the American video sharing site on the 28th July, 2014, has 431,666 views and counting.

Commenting on the impressive milestone, the producer Cherno said: “I am so happy that almost all Gambians who understand Mandinka, in the Diaspora have watched it.”

However, he said since the release of the film, he has not made a single butut out of it despite spending more than D45, 000 on its production.

“I don’t even know who uploaded it on YouTube. My guess is that he is making money from the views. I would like people to help me locate him.”

Cherno is one of the few active film producers in the country. According to him the industry is struggling because of piracy and lack of support from both the public and private sectors.
