A spiritual healer from Jah Kunda in the Wuli area, Ebrima Trawally, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined D200,000 after being found guilty of raping a 19-year-old client.
According to the case, Trawally had been treating the young woman after convincing her and her parents that he could help her overcome what they believed was jinn possession and enable her to live a normal life.
The court heard that during a social event in Jah Kunda, Trawally allegedly took the young woman into a nearby bush and gave her a concoction that caused her to lose consciousness. He then raped her.
The incident reportedly remained undisclosed for about four months.
The matter came to light after the girl’s parents suspected that she was pregnant. When questioned, she reportedly told them what happened and identified Trawally as the person responsible.
Trawally was subsequently arrested and detained at the Diabugu Police Station before being released on bail as investigations continued.
The case later went to the Basse Magistrates’ Court, where Trawally was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The court also imposed a D200,000 fine.
