More than 20 Gambians want to run for president in December 2021. With the election less than five months, here are some of the presidential aspirants:
President Adama Barrow
He wants Gambians to give him a second term to complete his “projects”. He was an estate manager before running for president in 2016.
Ousainou Darboe
A former Vice President under Barrow, he is the leader of the UDP. Darboe is a retired lawyer.
Halifa Sallah
He was one of the most prominent leaders in the opposition coalition that ended Jammeh’s 22-year-old rule. Halifa is the presidential candidate for the PDOIS.
Mama Kandeh
He’s the leader of the GDC. Mama is a former National Assembly member for Jimara Constituency in the URR.
Dr. Ismaila Ceesay
He’s the country’s youngest party leader. A Ph.D. holder, Dr. Ceesay is a lecturer at the University of The Gambia.
Bakary Bunja Darboe
Best known for being Sir Dawda Jawara’s vice president, BB Darboe’s party, GFA was established in 2019.
Mai Ahmad Fatty
His party, GMC was formed in 2009. A former minister in Barrow’s administration, Mai was an active advisor to President Barrow.
Other presidential aspirants include ANRD’s Lamin Bojang, DP’s Yusupha Dumbuya, GANU’s Sheikh Tijan Hydara, NUP’s Ousman Jammeh and APP’s Gumbo Touray.
Essa Faal, Baba Galleh Jallow, Kitabu Fatty, Marie Sock, Bankole Yao Jojo Ahadzie (Banky), Alhagie Mamadi Kurang, Ebrima Manneh, Touma Njai, Amadou Kanteh and Tamsir Jasseh also wants to be president and commander in chief.
