The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) has awarded a contract to dredge the Barra ferry landing site to a Senegalese company, Novelle Societe de Mines et des Travaux Publics (NSMTP).
Site preparation work is underway and the dredging will begin soon, with completion of the project expected before the end of this year.
An insider at the GPA told What's On-Gambia: " NSMTP was selected because they have a suction dredger, which I don't think is available in The Gambia."
When asked whether there was a public tender process, he said: "I don't think so. All I know is that the contract was given to a Senegalese company. But the Hydrographic survey of the site was done by technicians at the port."
The deputy managing director at GPA disclosed the dredging will cost them more than D8 million.
“It was a very big problem to access a dredging company that can access Barra until we found this Senegalese company," he told journalists.
