Badou Jack on boxing for The Gambia, relationship with Mike Tyson and Mayweather …in a chat with What’s On-Gambia

Badou Jack, aka The Ripper, said to What’s On-Gambia that he does not regret choosing to represent The Gambia at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The champion boxer, who is based in Las Vegas, USA, won the respect of Gambians for taking such a huge decision and he was given the honor to bear the Gambian flag at the Olympic opening ceremony.

Badou was born in Sweden to a Gambian dad and a Swedish mum.  After a long break from the spotlight in The Gambia, The Ripper took time out of his busy schedule to chat with our reporter;

What’s On Gambia: When was the first time you visited The Gambia and how would you describe it?

Badou: First time I visited Gambia was back in December of 2000. It was a great trip. I miss Gambia and hopefully I'll be there soon.

What motivated you to become a boxer and how do your parents feel about your boxing?

I always loved boxing and my friend brought me to the gym when I was 17 and I've been there since. My parents support me and are very proud of me.

What was it like the first time you had a fight and how long did you prepare for it?

It was a great feeling and my first amateur fight was back in 2001. I won by knockout in the 2nd round. I prepared 2-3 months for that fight.

How do you celebrate victory?

After my fight last week with Farah Ennis, I celebrated it with a dinner with my teammates and then straight to bed.

You decided to represent the Gambia at the 2008 Olympics. How did you come to that decision and any regrets?

I wanted to make dad proud and the Gambian people, so I decided to try to qualify for them instead. I have absolutely no regrets for that.

What is your opinion about boxing in The Gambia?

Hopefully boxing can get bigger in Gambia and I know there is a lot of talent in our country.

You are seemingly connected to former world champion, Mike Tyson, can you tell us about your relationship?

Mike Tyson is a good friend to my trainer Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. He used to visit my gym sometimes and give me and the other guys advice and last year,  he walked me to the ring in one of my fights. He's a real good and funny guy.

What about Floyd Mayweather?

Floyd Mayweather is the biggest star in boxing today and also the highest paid athlete in the world. He's my promoter and mentor and he treats me like a little brother.

What are your goals in boxing? Do you think you will square up with Mayweather one day?

My goal is to become a world champion and make money of course but also make my family and fans proud. No I'm never going to fight Floyd Mayweather he's 4 weight classes under me.

Wrestling is very popular in Senegal and The Gambia. Is it something that you might want to try in the future?  (laughs)

No (laughs) I'm never going to do wrestling. I'm a pure boxer and I will stick to that.

Do you have any favorite Gambian dish?

Yes I love benachin, yazza and domoda!

What are the special things you like about The Gambia?

I like the food, the culture, the people the weather.

Any final words?

I want to thank all my Gambian brothers and sister for all the support and prayers.
