The elders of Banjul have allegedly nominated two Banjulians for the position of Inspector General of Police (IGP).  

A State House insider, who begged for anonymity, disclosed the names were sent to President Adama Barrow after the sudden death of IGP Mamour Jobe.  

"The nominees are Abu Jeng and Ebrima Chongan. They want one of them to head our police," said the insider.  

According to his Linkedin page, Chongan is a European criminal justice policy adviser at the British Home Office. He claims to be an experienced policy advisor with a demonstrated history of working in the government administration industry.  

But many at the Police Headquarters in Banjul want the late Mamour Jobe to be replaced by his deputy, Abdoulie Sanyang arguing that a serving member of the Gambia Police Force should be the IGP. 

Abdoulie, who holds a Master's Degree, is a seasoned police officer with many years of law enforcement experience under his belt. 

Our State House insider said: "Abdoulie is the right person for the job, but some of the president's surrogates including Tourism Minister Hamat Bah wants the position to be given to AIG Ebrima Bah or AIG Demba Sowe." 

He added: "They also want the Commissioner at North Bank Region, Momodou Sowe, a former deputy IGP, to be moved to the Police Headquarters." 

Under the constitution, President Adama Barrow has the sole power to appoint an IGP.
