With house rents rising and salaries stagnant, affording rent is becoming an insurmountable burden on many Gambians.  

One Lovetta Koroma, who works as a teacher, told What's On-Gambia: "House rents are rising faster than Usain Bolt. It's getting out of hand. I am paying more than D5000 per month for a two-bedroom house. "  

She added: "It will come to a time, teachers will not be able to pay their rent." 

Another woman living in Kololi, who begged for anonymity, claimed many tenants in her area have experienced an increase in their monthly rent in the last 12 months. 

"Recently, people have been complaining so much about landlords increasing house rents just like that without discussing it with their tenants," she said.  

In many parts of the Greater Banjul Area, tenants who do not agree with rent increase are usually evicted without proper legal notification.
