British woman: It is very expensive to maintain a Gambian husband

If you are a European woman thinking of marrying a Gambian, you better start saving. You would need a lot of money.

In a chat with What’s On-Gambia, a British woman (name withheld) claimed her wedding ceremony and her husband’s expenses left her with a £7000 debt to pay.

According to her, since tying the knot she was responsible for providing him with a monthly allowance that covers his rent, food and fuel for his car.

“I also take care of his car repairs, his friends’ car repairs and his dad’s request for money,” she said.

The couple met on the social networking site, Tagged. They were friends before they started dating.

“We became friends on Tagged last year in July. He kept asking me to be with him. We chatted on Tagged a while until in October when we started dating.”

In February 2016, the British woman travelled to The Gambia to meet her online lover for the first time and guess what? They got married in the same month!

She said: “I married him nine days after meeting him. It was quick.”

The marriage is now on the rocks, but she is reluctant to let him go.

“I love him so much and I don’t want to think he’s capable of being such a heartless bastard. We are fighting since I came home because of the distance. And he lied to me at the beginning then I had tons of questions he won’t answer.

“Sometimes, I tried to hate him but I can’t. We argue like I’ve never imagine. I told him to block me. If I do find out he’s already got a wife and kids, I will go crazy on him. I don’t know why I never met his real parents. He said I had met them, then I found out they were his aunt and uncle.”

The British woman is planning to bring her husband to join her in the UK. She hopes that would help fix their broken marriage and also reduce the burden of taking care of his needs.
