Celebrating 50 years of marriage: Lady Chilel praised as role model for women

Bamba Mass has recently taken to Facebook to pay tribute to former First Lady Chilel Jawara, saying she is a role model for Gambian women.

The famous UDP politician wrote: “When you married Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara in 1968 at a young age then, many thought you did because he was the President and you wanted to be the First Lady. Some even alleged you were planted by some for them to gain influence in the State House. But you see, you have proven to be a true woman of valour and a God fearing angel that has a heart of gold sparkling with diamonds.”

Bamba’s post came shortly after Chilel and Sir Dawda celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He praised the former First Lady for standing by her husband through thick and thin.

The politician said: “Gambia would celebrate you till doomsday mark my words for you are a true living legend.

“Fifty years since you married Jawara each day is like the day you walked in through the front door. But many didn’t notice until after his presidency where you doubled up your love and care for a man you knew all your adult life.

“Anyone that has even an ounce of Jawara Kunda blood celebrates you Maa and the entire nation exalts your praise! Thank you, Maa!”

Chilel and the former president got married in 1968. She is the daughter of the late Alhagie Momodou Musa Njie, who was a prominent Banjulian businessman.
