It will be hard without being told that behind the laughs and jokes of an adorable woman, lies the harrowing experiences of being a child bride.
Scotland-based Gambian comedian, Amie Jobe, who got married seven times from the age of 9, has recounted her traumatic ordeal.
She chooses a path that overshadows the pain she has gone through and refused to be treated as an object of societal norms and cultures that seek to undermine her progress in life as a woman with dreams.
In a Live Facebook interview with Fatoumatta Rahman Coker, the comedian revealed that she was married off to an elderly man at the age of 9 but said the marriage was never consummated.
“I was to move to his house immediately I had my first period, but my family later discovered that he was impotent and that was why the marriage ended’’.
Amie further disclosed that she got married again when she was 12 to a Malian migrant who was close to one of her relatives. Unlike the previous marriage, she moved to live with him.
She told Fatoumatta that all her marriages collapsed because of her refusal to sleep with the men, two of whom are elderly with wrinkles.
When asked why her parents married her off at the age of 9, she said it was common in her Fana Fana culture. Her own mum got married at a very young age.
The outspoken comedian, who has more than 2,500 followers on Facebook, appealed to parents to stop giving their daughters away to men who are old enough to be their father.
According to her, early marriage is not accepted in Islam.
Amie is now a single mum and lives with her two children in Edinburgh Scotland. She got her first child when she was 20 years old.
