Dalaba girl left devastated after waiting hours at airport for online boyfriend who never arrived

A young woman living at the Dalaba Estate was left devastated after waiting hours at the Banjul International Airport for her online boyfriend who never arrived.

The young woman (name withheld) was at the airport with friends to meet the "American man" for the first time after building up a relationship with him online for more than four months.

One of her friends disclosed to What's On-Gambia: "They met on Facebook and started chatting every day. The man said he was a non-Muslim but was ready to convert to Islam to marry her and bring her to the USA. They never saw each other, but after months of talking, she fell in love and trusted the man."

She continued: "Recently, he told the girl that he was coming to The Gambia to meet her. The girl informed her family and started looking for an apartment where they would stay during his visit.

"On the day he said he was arriving, the girl and two of her friends went to the airport to receive him. After waiting for hours, the man called and said he was in Dakar and they didn't allow him to proceed to Banjul. According to him, he was supposed to pay D10,000 for a transit visa and wanted the girl to send him the money via Western Union. When the girl told him that she had no money on her, he started complaining."

The man, who uses the name Frank Dominic on Facebook, never showed up at the Banjul International Airport. The whole incident left the young woman in a pitiful condition, wondering why she bothered to wait for hours for a stranger she met on Facebook.
