A 22-year-old woman has claimed her father refused to let her marry her boyfriend of three years because he is an Arabic school graduate. 

 In an e-mail to What's On-Gambia, the young woman, who begged for anonymity, disclosed: "I met the boy three years ago and we agreed to get married. He sent the first cola nuts to my mum's family and they accepted it."

 She continued: "My dad, who lives in the USA, refused. He said the boy is illiterate. He said he would never give her daughter away to an illiterate.."

 According to the 22-year-old, her angry father blocked her on Facebook and vowed to disown her if she walks down the aisle with her Arabic school graduate boyfriend. 

 "I cry every day. I am devastated and frustrated and don't know what to do," she said. 

 She revealed that she holds a WASSCE certificate and a diploma in International Relations and Politics.
