Fatou Camara at centre of controversy over article questioning The Gambia’s anti-terrorism capabilities

The rising terrorism attacks the latest of which hit Brussels have sparked off furious debate online over The Gambia’s level of preparedness for any terror attack, and Fatou Camara is unfailingly at the centre of it.

The controversy erupted after a publication on Fatou’s online newspaper by Kabiru Darboe, an outspoken UK-based Gambian who criticised the country for not putting much into anti-terrorism efforts.

He wrote: “Have we surrendered our faith to the heavens for protection in an event of terrorists visiting our shores or do we have secret weapons that the terrorists are aware of and will dare not bring their bullshit to us? These are some of the questions that authorities in The Gambia need to answer and address the country as soon as they can.”

Kabiru’s article, published a few days after Belgium’s terror attacks that killed 30 people, did not sit well with many.

Criticisms have since been directed at Fatou Camara, the publisher of the anti-government online publication.

Some of her Facebook followers accused her of spreading fear amongst Gambians to score political points against her former boss, President Jammeh.

Ebrima Nyassi from Brikama described the former presidential press secretary as a heartless woman who wants to see the county slide into chaos.

“How dare you wishing your country to be in chaos, but to be honest you are now mad, Fatou Camara,” he wrote, adding:  “Insha Allah you shall never see or witness this beautiful country in chaos.”

One Alieu Badara Sallah also commented:  “We are all Gambians, so we should not pray for terrorist attacks in the country even if you are away your parents are there. May Allah protect us.”

Fatou Camara, who is famous for stirring controversy, is yet to respond to the complaints against the article.
