Gambia to battle Djibouti for AFCON 2021 qualifier

The Gambian national team, Scorpions are warming up to play Djibouti in the preliminary rounds of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021 qualifiers.

If the Scorpions win the match set to be played in October, they will be placed in Group D, where DR Congo, Benin and Angola have been drawn.

The draw for the 33rd edition of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers was recently announced in Cairo, Egypt and it is expected to bring together 48 national teams.

The finals will be held in Cameron.

The CEO and General Secretary of the Gambia Football Federation (GFF), Lamin Jassey told What's On-Gambia: "We are hopeful that we will qualify this time around provided we have all the necessary financial and moral support from the government. We have already started the preparations in earnest."

He added: “To qualify, we need the support and cooperation of everyone including the private sector. Football is very expensive to run especially a national team. We hope that the entire nation will give their support to the GFF in its quest to qualify the Scorpions to Afcon for the first time."

The qualifiers will be another test for the national team to excel past the group stage after several futile attempts.
