Gambians head to polls tomorrow for parliamentary elections

More than 800,000 Gambians will head to ballot boxes tomorrow for parliamentary elections to choose 53 National Assembly members out of 238 vying for seats.

The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) under the leadership of Mamma Kandeh has the most candidates, closely followed by Lawyer Ousainou Darboe’s United Democratic Party (UDP).

Unlike the last several elections, this year will feature dozens of independent candidates and the majority of them are newbies in politics.

An Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) official disclosed to What’s On-Gambia that there is a high-than-usual enthusiasm among voters.

“We are expecting a record turnout on Thursday,” he said.

Some of the candidates that are likely to win in their constituencies include the leader of the People's Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), Halifa Sallah, Alhagie S. Darboe of the UDP and Salifu Jawo of GDC.
