Girl wants to be hijabi but…

A 20-year-old girl said she wants to become a hijabi, but doesn't have the money to buy Islamic clothing.

One of her friends disclosed to What's On-Gambia: "She's a party girl who likes wearing revealing outfits but now she wants to dress modestly. "

He continued: "The problem is she doesn't have money to buy new clothes. She really wants to be an ebadu."

The 20-year-old, who begged for anonymity, lives with her grandmother in the West Coast Region. She recently completed an IT course at QuantumNET, but still struggling to find a job.

In Islam, the concept of haya or modesty is a distinctive quality of the faith. Men and women alike are commanded in the Qur’an to observe modesty.

The Qur’an addresses Islamic modest dress as follows:

“And tell the believing men to lower their gaze and be modest. That is purer for them. Lo! Allah is aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to [those relatives who fall within bounds of close relationship explained in the Qur’an]...” Chapter 24, Verses 30-31.
