Havana scandal: Ambassador Hydara asked me to replace old staff with young Latino girls – deputy alleges

The Gambia's deputy ambassador to Cuba alleged that his boss, Ambassador Sheikh Tijan Hydara told him to sack old staff and employ young Latino girls.

Hydara, the leader of the Gambia Alliance for National Unity, was appointed ambassador by President Adama Barrow shortly after the 2021 presidential elections.

Vincent Mendy revealed in a letter to the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lang Yabou: "After he presented his letters of credence and reported to the office, he verbally requested me to dismiss all the staff that are old and bring in younger girls."

He continued: "I responded that it is too early for us to start dismissing staff because we are both new in the office and it is not decorum to dismiss people just because they are advanced in age. Since his intention to dismiss the staff he identified as old failed, he proceeded to make the embassy hell for everyone, especially those he wanted to dismiss. Despite their age and the respect they give him, he would insult them at every available opportunity, causing them unnecessary stress and problems."

Vincent further disclosed that it is very difficult and nearly impossible to live or work with Hydara.

According to him, the ambassador "exhibits the character traits, behaviors and habits of a chronic drunkard, womanizer and a man who follows people's wives."
