Here’s why the Ministry of Health wants to buy condoms

The acting Director of Health Services has defended his ministry's proposal to purchase condoms as part of a national comprehensive COVID-19 response plan.

In a brief interview with What's On-Gambia, Dr Mustapha Bittaye said: "Condoms are one of the best barrier contraceptive methods for infectious diseases, not the pills and we have to ensure there is continuity of all services."

His ministry's proposal to spend thousands of dalasi on the thin rubber sheath was met with much criticism from the public.

"COVID-19 is a novel disease and keeps changing daily thus the plan is being updated. The procurement so far has not included condoms," said Dr Bittaye.

However, a senior nurse at the Bwiam General Hospital in Foni said: "I still don't understand why the ministry wants to buy condoms. We already have a lot of them in our stores. We got enough condoms before the pandemic."

He added: " Right now, we have only one couple in quarantine and they can't exhaust all the condoms they want to purchase."
