Humanity Starz accused of ‘betraying’ and ‘abandoning’ Sandeng

Fatoumatta Sandeng is in a state of mourning, but no amount of protests for postponement from her sympathisers would discourage her former band, Humanity Starz, from launching their latest album.

The event, held recently at the Jama Hall, Kairaba Beach hotel, attracted a star-studded audience.

Sandeng’s father, Solo, an opposition UDP executive member, was reportedly tortured to death while in state custody following his arrest over street protests for electoral reforms

Widely described as one of the country’s finest female singers, Sandeng had since left the band for the financial services sector. But many still believed that Humanity Starz owed it to their former lead vocalist, with some branding the band members as ‘heartless friends’.

Not to be silenced, the former Nusrat Senior Secondary student has issued a veiled attack apparently directed at her former friends on Facebook.

Sandeng wrote:  “You know, I wouldn’t blame all those inconsiderate Gambians who sit outside concerned about nothing but the next show to attend or how well they want to dress so they can be called 'girl of the moment' smh...”

She added: “The Gambia is full of good looking hypocrites who are unconscious of their future but what to eat the next morning...people in the diaspora, raising awareness, speaking out and crying for the betterment of the Gambia are better than you who is right in the heart of The Gambia yet don't recognise what’s happening. I call that ignorance, that is not being wise.”

But she’s not short of support. Although the state is yet to confirm whether Sandeng’s father is alive or dead, there has been an outpouring of reaction across social media as people offer their support and show solidarity with her.
