In Lamin, Parents Block Daughter From Marrying Teacher

A teacher in Lamin has expressed shock and disappointment after the parents of his girlfriend reportedly refused to allow him to marry their daughter.

The teacher, who requested anonymity, said the rejection has left him deeply concerned about what he describes as a growing bias against teachers in The Gambia when it comes to marriage.

“This is a serious concern for me,” he said. “Why is it so difficult for teachers in The Gambia to marry the women of their choice? Very often, once a teacher introduces himself as a teacher, the lady and her family begin to change their minds.”

According to him, his girlfriend initially accepted his marriage proposal. However, when the matter was presented to her parents, they declined to give their consent.

“When I told her that I wanted to marry her, she agreed,” he explained. “But her parents refused.”

The teacher said the experience has left him shocked and disheartened, raising broader questions about societal attitudes toward the teaching profession and its impact on personal relationships.
