Pa Modou Ceesay, a Gambian resident in the United States, has accused his wife, Alimatou Habibou Gaye, of allegedly defrauding him of more than D9 million before disappearing without a trace.
In an audio message sent to What’s On-Gambia, Ceesay alleged that his wife diverted millions of dalasis he had sent to her to purchase land on his behalf. He further claimed that Alimatou sold some of his plots of land in the Greater Banjul Area and used the proceeds for her personal benefit.
According to Ceesay, when he was preparing to travel to The Gambia, Alimatou fled to Senegal. He said he made several attempts to persuade her to return, but all efforts proved unsuccessful.
Speaking in an interview with What’s On-Gambia, Ceesay explained that he began a relationship with Alimatou in the 1990s in Banjul. He migrated to the United States in 1998, and the couple married a year later. Their first child was born in January 1999.
He said the marriage later broke down amid accusations of infidelity. Alimatou subsequently married another man, with whom she had two children. That marriage, Ceesay alleged, also ended in divorce.
Ceesay stated that about ten years ago, he and Alimatou reconciled and remarried, after which he entrusted her with managing his properties and finances in The Gambia.
He also alleged that he purchased land in Kaolack, Senegal, but has been unable to access the ownership documents, which he claims are still in Alimatou’s possession.
Ceesay is now appealing to both Gambian and Senegalese authorities to assist in locating his wife and helping him recover his alleged losses.
