In our last publication we promised to introduce to you another Gambian DJ. His name is Mutabaruka and he started deejaying in 2003, but it wasn’t until 2004 when he decided to adopt deejaying as his new career.
Born and brought up in Brikama, Mutabaruka started his career with the Brikama Community Radio (FMB). Later he moved to Yiriwa FM, then to Teranga FM, Vibes FM and now he is with Star FM.
“Reggae music inspired me to become a DJ. When I was young, I listened to lot of roots reggae and I wanted everyone to enjoy it with me,†he told What’ s On-Gambia.
Born in 1987, the talented DJ has already rubbed shoulders with world renowned singers like Peetah Morgan.
“My desire is to become not only a household name in The Gambia but the whole world wide. It’s always good to dream big. I want to bring foreign artists to the country and also take Gambian artists abroad to attend major reggae festivals.â€
DJ Mutabaruka’s popularity is fast rising as he cements himself as one of the country’s most formidable reggae DJs.
“I do reggae and that’s what I’m best at and that’s what people know me for.â€
You might be wondering why he took the name Mutabaruka. This was his response when we asked him; “Jamaica’s Mutabaruka is my idol. I like what he is doing and I strongly believe in his philosophies about Africa and black people. Tell me, what best way can I honor him than taking his name as my deejaying identity?â€
DJ Mutabaruka is live on Star FM on Tuesdays at 24:00-02:00 (reggae dancehall flash), Wednesdays at 18:00 – 20:00 (Manding music) and Sundays at 24:00 -02:00 (Roots reggae). Star FM is also online via www.tunein.com.
