He was known as one of The Gambia’s most successful painters. Etu Ndow passed away on the 23rd March 2014.
One of his famous paintings is currently on sale through an online auction. Maddy of Gaya Art Café in Senegambia told What’s On-Gambia: “Last year, we were supposed to host an exhibition for Etu at Gaya. All his paintings were up on the wall ready, brochures done, invitation list for exhibition getting ready, then sadly, he passed away.
“His wife asked us to hold on to his paintings and keep them safe. So they were hung in Gaya for quite a few months.”
She added: “After several meetings and discussions with Etu's wife and cousin, it was decided that Etu's paintings will not be sold just yet, as these now, are the only works left for his wife and children.
“However, they are in need of some money, so she asked Gregor, the gentleman that organises the art exhibitions at Gaya, who got to know Etu quite well, if he could auction one of the paintings to raise some money for her and the children.”
Etu was a gifted painter and sculptor, who was highly respected both in The Gambia and abroad. In 2008 he won a place in a worldwide event, the Changchun International Sculpture Arts Exhibition and Symposium held in China where he was chosen to represent The Gambia and West Africa.
