Journalist Mariama Jallow denies tribalism after allegations against GID

Teranga FM's Mariama Jallow has defended herself against allegations of tribalism after accusing the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) of harassment and ethnic profiling.

The outspoken journalist faced a backlash after posting a statement on Facebook revealing she met the Director General of the GID to discuss the difficulties Fulas go through at the hands of his officers.

"We discussed how best we can join hands together and remedy the situation our Fula communities are facing in this country especially the foreigners when it comes to document issues. No full stop until we all raise our hands to be recommended everywhere. Together we can, inshallah," she wrote.

Mariama said she will always use her voice for her people.

She insisted: "Discrimination towards our Fula communities must stop, especially our Guinean brothers."

However, her comments on Facebook drew criticism for accusing the GID of ethnic profiling.

One Kitibi KD Yaffa wrote: "Madam Jallow, do you realise that you made some serious allegations against the immigration officers? Do you have evidence of what you alleged?"

The journalist responded: "My dear, hope you really know what is going on. We have all the evidence."

Mariama is widely believed to be the most popular Fula newsreader. She has more than 20,000 followers on Facebook.
