Ministry of Defence gives D50,000 to family of teenagers killed by ECOMIG soldier

The family of the teenagers, who were killed in a traffic accident involving an ECOMIG soldier, allegedly received D50,000 from the Ministry of Defence.

"The Minister of Defence, Sheikh Omar Faye and some senior ECOMIG soldiers were at the funeral on Monday and gave the family D50,000. It was announced at the mosque," said a source close to the family.

Korka Bah and his brother, Kemo were killed when their tricycle was knocked by an ECOMIG vehicle at the Mariama Kunda Junction early Sunday morning.

They both died on the spot and four of their friends, who were sitting in the carriage of the tricycle ,were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

In a statement, the ECOMIG commander in the country, Cheikh Omar Tamba confirmed that his officer fled the scene after killing Korka and Kemo.

He wrote: “On 5 September 2021 at about 01:00hrs, a Ghanaian contingent Ecomig vehicle was moving from Old Yundum towards the general area of Fajara. On reaching Mariama Kunda Junction, a tricycle that was trying to avert a pothole suddenly ran into his lane from the left side of the road which resulted in a collision."

The teenagers were buried on Monday at the New Yundum Cemetry. One of their friends disclosed: "It was a sad day, everyone was crying. Korka was a Grade 12 student at Model Senior Secondary School."

He appealed to the government "to do the right" and drag the ECOMIG soldier to court for taking two young lives.
