England-based Gambian footballer, Modou Barrow opted out from playing an important AFCON qualifier on Saturday claiming he needed to be beside his pregnant wife.
Some Gambian football enthusiasts believed him and supported his decision, but to their surprise, photos of the player having a nice time in Stockholm hit the internet. He actually travelled to the Swedish capital to spend time with his pal, Jack Jagne.
One Edrisa Kandeh, who was not impressed, wrote on Facebook: “Is high time we start giving courage and confidence to the players that are available to play for us. No players can be indispensable.”
Former University of The Gambia lecturer, Samba Bah also said: “This is the second time that Modou is involved in a situation like this.”
Despite Barrow’s absence, the national team managed to hold the Desert Foxes of Algeria to a 1-all draw in a thrilling encounter in from an overcrowded stadium.
The general secretary of the Gambia Football Federation, Lamin Jassey told What’s On-Gambia that they have started an investigation into why the England-based footballer declined their invitation.
