Olympian Gina Bass wallows in poverty while GNOC executive makes millions

A monkey work baboon eat scenario is playing out in the Olympic House. Gambians might have been elated at the raising of the Gambian flag in Rio, but the life of one of the stars who made all that happen is not something to smile about.

Being an Olympian brings money from endorsements, allowances and donations. But not for The Gambia’s Gina Bass. She is undoubtedly one of the poorest Olympians in the world.

The 21-year-old went to Rio with no support from the country’s major companies. And according to unconfirmed reports reaching What’s On-Gambia, she received less than D50, 000 from the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC).

Unlike her peers in other countries, Gina is not even paid a salary.

An online sports commentator described the Olympian as: “the athlete that takes gele gele to and from training.”

While Gina continues to receive very little funding and hardly makes money from her sport, the GNOC bosses are raking in thousands of US dollars every year.

It is not surprising that GNOC is one of the most corrupt sports organisations in the country, and always embroiled in crises over leadership positions.

In 2011, the committee was almost torn apart by an internal conflict. The National Assembly had to step in to restore order.

More about the GNOC and how they are exploiting our national athletes coming soon!
