Omar Cham, commonly called ‘Tha Champion Poet’, has released a new spoken word poetry audio titled “When I Die”, a piece that has gained a lot of attention and popularity among the populace from the first hours after it was released.
Widely known to be The Gambia’s current master poet, the young champion is the first winner of the National Poetry Slam organized by GRTS in 2016. He has since advanced his poetry career further with a lot of high-level performances at mega shows and conferences, most notably at the launching of the National Think Tank at the state house, the Open Mic Festival 2017 and the World Festival of Youths and Students in Russia in 2017.
Champion was also part of the poets that made the selection for the 2017 poetry documentary, End dependence, in celebration of The Gambia’s 53 years of independence.
Known for his creativity and dynamism in writing and performing poetry, Omar has taken a new route of releasing poetry audios and videos to so as to reach everyone that does not have the opportunity to watch his breath-taking performances and even for those that witness them, to be opportune to renew such joy with the audios or videos in their possession.
The piece, “When I Die” captures a great mixture of lessons and wisdom, with a reminder on good deeds and the importance of repentance, the torture of hellfire, and the luxury of heaven, just to name a few.
The poem is microwaved in a manner that every religion can relate to it and it has a special touch of the local language, an addition that saves the signature of origin and culture irrespective of how far the piece may go.
This masterpiece is a must-listen-to artwork, not just because of its deep content, touching lessons and wisdom but also because it manifests the creativity of young people of this country and the re-emergence of another dimension of enlightenment.
